From matchmaker to personal shopper - Cupid's picks for Valentine's Day

Ernex, Moneris' gift card and electronic loyalty division, found gift card activations jumped 25% during the two-week period leading up to Valentine's Day 2004. The adoption rate of gift cards by merchants and consumers is expected to increase substantially this year - fueled in part by Moneris' recent launch of a gift card program for independent businesses.

2005 Update!

The previous release was distributed in early February 2005, before Valentine's Day, so 2004 numbers were used. Well, how was 2005? According to our card activation numbers, the dollar amount of card activations during this timeframe was up 245 percent in 2005 versus 2004!

National Hotel Executive recently featured an article by Malcolm Fowler titled "Gift Cards - A New Revenue Stream for Hotels"

Gift cards have been growing at a phenomenal rate in the retail and restaurant spaces over the past several years. In fact, the JC Williams Group estimates that gift card sales in the United States will grow to over $70 billion by the year 2006. A few major hotel chains have launched gift card programs, but what exactly are the benefits of electronic based gift cards over traditional paper certificate programs and how can mid-sized hotel chains capitalize on this new trend? It is important to explore current uses of gift cards and to understand new twists on the traditional gift card model being presented in the market.
